Uber Class Action

Maurice Blackburn has filed a class action against Uber on behalf of participants in the taxi, hire car, limousine and charter vehicle industry. This class action was introduced in response to losses suffered by drivers, licence owners, and operators, when Uber entered the Australian market.

A Win in Parliament

A Win in Parliament
The motion that Rod Barton, MP raised the other week in the Legislative Council, sought recognition for the pain and financial devastation that Victorian taxi and hire car licence holders experienced at the hands of the 2017 CPV industry reforms.

He effectively asked the Andrews Labor government to accept a financial proposal to properly compensate the industry for the revocation of Victorian taxi and hire car licences, as well as restructuring the CPV industry to end driver exploitation.

And it is very encouraging to have Rod Barton win this important vote 19 - 18.
Rod now has the opportunity to continue to fight for some compensation, some justice for all taxi and hire car owners who were dealt a very severe blow when the 2017 Commercial Passenger Industry reforms were undertaken.

He has been able to secure meetings when parliament returns in February 2021, with the Victorian Treasurer - Tim Pallas, Minister for Transport Infrastructure - Jacinta Allan, and Minister for Transport - Ben Carroll, all to speak about this cause.

Let's hope that Rod's arguments and assertiveness are received well by all parties, and that we can finally report some good financial news to industry stakeholders.

We shall keep all TAA members updated as discussions progress.

My late husband, Alan Munro, was a taxi man, through and through! His Father, I.R. (Snowy) Munro started Embassy taxis.
Alan had 6 taxis in both our names and I had 5 taxis in my name, 11 in all. Alan ran his taxis from his home in Coburg in the 50-60s When he died in November, 2017, he left a taxi licence each to his children (I had 2 step-children and our son). We were married for 49 years.I never told him they had been deregulated - taxis were his life! His stepchildren took me to the Supreme Court in 2018 to challenge the will - the Judge was very aware of the deregulation - I won the case but my costs were $60,000. I am sure this has shattered a lot of families financially and emotionally. My step-daughter died of cancer in 2019 and my step-son has not spoken to me in 3 years!
